cd-detailAndrew Patner interviewed Donald Nally on his January 26 broadcast of Critical Thinking, one of his programs on WFMT-FM, Chicago’s classical music station. Patner is WFMT’s critic-at-large and is also a classical music critic for the Chicago Sun-Times. Donald is the chorus master at Chicago Lyric Opera and is the founder and director of The Crossing, which, with Piffaro, premiered and recorded Vespers last year. The CD on Parma (detail from CD cover is on the left) is due for release in just a few weeks.

While they cover some of the work of Donald with the Chicago Lyric Chorus, including its hugely successful, first-ever standalone concert this past Christmas season, they mostly discuss The Crossing (based in Philadelphia), its mission, and some of its repertoire.  Featured from Vespers is a live recording of the 16-voice a cappella hymn “Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn.” While it is No. 9 of the 13 sections, it is the first part I actually completed and sent to Donald.

In the interview, I follow the first movement of the Kaija Saariaho Tag des Jahrs and precede David Langs I lie, Erhard Karkoschka’s Es ist ein Schnitter (#2), and Gabriel Jackson’s Creator of the Stars of Night. The interview is here; the link to the audio should be near the top of the page.
